Carpet Padding Underlay Types

Foam carpet underlay: Density is typically 2-5 lbs.

Frothed foam underlay: Density should be 12+ lbs for durability.

Rebond carpet underlay: Density is 5-10 lbs. Go for a minimum of 6lb if durability is essential.

Synthetic fibre underlay pad: It is usually rated in ounces but may be rated in pounds. If durability matters, go for at least 30 oz and preferably 40 oz+ (or 7.5+ lbs).

Waffle rubber underlay: Go for a minimum of 64 ounces. Furthermore, 90 oz is preferred.

Slab rubber underlay: Usually comes in 18-22 lbs. However, I prefer 21 lbs+ for durability or close to 100 ounces.
